Snap, read the assumptions, correct, confirm. The photo step is the same speed as any photo calorie app; the difference is what comes back.
- Snap the plate from above, with everything in frame. Add a sentence if you like: "that is a double portion of rice".
- Read the draft. Foods, assumed portions ("Rice estimated at 1 cup cooked"), calories, protein, carbs, fat, fiber, and sugar, and a calorie band such as 640 ±80.
- Correct and confirm. "The rice was two cups" updates every row and total. Nothing counts until you confirm.
What assumptions does a photo estimate show?
Everything the camera cannot see: portion weight, cooking fat, hidden ingredients, and the version of an ambiguous food. Typical lines are "Assumed grilled, not fried", "Dressing counted as 2 tbsp", "Assumed 2% milk". A photo has wider calorie bands than a described meal with quantities, and the assumptions list is where that width comes from. Read it before confirming.
How do I get a better photo estimate?
Shoot from above in good light with the whole plate in frame; include a fork or hand for scale; and add one sentence for what the photo cannot show: sauces, oil, a second helping, a brand. The sentence and the photo are estimated together, so "with a tablespoon of olive oil" narrows the band more than any camera angle.
What are the limits?
A photo estimate uses one AI estimate: up to 12 AI estimates per day and 120 per month (50 during the trial). Saved-meal reuse and manual logging always remain available. Photos are estimates with stated assumptions, not label-verified numbers; if you weigh your food and verify against labels, use MacroFactor or Cronometer. A connected assistant cannot send a photo to Macropass: photo and voice logging stay inside the Macropass app.
What happens to my meal photos?
Meal photos have location metadata removed before upload. They are stored with the meal so the diary shows what you ate, exported with your data, and deleted with your account. There are no ads and no data resale. Full policy: macropass.app/privacy.

Is Macropass a photo calorie counter?
Photo is one of three inputs. Macropass logs your meals from a sentence, a voice note, or a photo, and every input returns the same draft with items, assumptions and a calorie band.
Can Macropass scan a barcode or a nutrition label?
No. Type a description, hold to talk, or snap a photo. There is no food database, no barcode scanner, and no macro-by-macro form. You can type the label's numbers into the draft.
How accurate is a photo estimate?
It is an estimate with a stated band and a list of assumptions. Wide bands mean more assumptions; correct the assumptions in one sentence to narrow them.
Can I photograph a menu or packaging?
You can, and adding the dish name as a sentence helps more than the picture. Macropass estimates from what it recognises and lists what it assumed.
Can Claude or ChatGPT log a photo into Macropass?
No. A connected assistant never uses Macropass photo, voice or AI estimation. It logs from text with its own model.
